Although the offer of a speed portrait in oil peaked my art marketing interest, I was thoroughly enamored with the light Justin captures in his landscapes.

Pelosi_smI have always loved turned and carved wood, reminiscent of my maternal grandfather’s cabinetry and the wood carvings of Norway – my heritage. I purchased that sweet lidded walnut box to sit on my dresser beside one made by my grandfather.

20th Anniversary Larkspur Party

 

The Larkspur Party in Raleigh (normally the first weekend in June) is always a treat. I stopped by a couple of weeks prior to the show to chat with Frances Alvariño Norwood, the founder, and her daughter Holly Alvariño Donaldson about the garden and the art show. Lovely people – hope to see them again soon!

Happy two of my sisters were with me for the garden party! Brava! Loved the shuttle – highly recommend it! If you happened to have visited this year’s party and want to share your thoughts on the art / artists, please reply to this post or leave a comment, below.

GardenSpiritsI have just begun writing up my post of the party and a handful of artists that graciously allowed me to photograph their art and ask questions.Thank you again for sharing with me Justin Donaldson, John Pelosi, and Patsy Skinner. If I should ever have a garden, I have my eye on a Frances “Fish Wife” to share some space with my other garden spirits.

I enjoyed a brief chat with Lisa Oakley about her glass jewelry, ordered a custom ring from Betty McKim and stopped by to introduce my my sisters to Susan Dahlin (one of my early blog post interviews– LOVE MY ROOSTER PILLOW!!). I also reintroduced myself to Tim Turner, a potter whom I included in a report on ash glazes while I was studying for my AS in Professional Arts & Crafts in Clay and Metal  Sculpture* at CCCC, .

In the next few days I will be tying up the post on these  Enjoy this brief writeup on Three Larkspur Artists and share some of their work and insights with you. Ya’ll come back now!

    Of all the art techniques I have tried, I have to say print-making is probably the most difficult to pull off, second only to etching.  Vidabeth has triumphed over the process of enacting the multiple steps of designing the print, preparing the screen(s) and then inking and pulling in such a way there is no perceived effort evident.

   Vidabeth gave a mini tutorial on making the screens and shared her long teaching career outside the US, and her collections. Her discussion of the process and all she puts into it -as well as the prints’ blossoming from her experiences in Europe, Asia and the Middle East- leaves me in awe to know the finished prints are a just single pieces of paper.   

    I chose this image to highlight here for two important reasons. It displays multiples of the Chinese character for “Art” and, as I didn’t take the opportunity to buy a t-shirt she sells of this marking, this post is a great way to remember the image. The ink and background colors in this piece, as well as the texture of the paper it is on make it very conducive to a happy patch of bamboo.

    I am presenting this partial image of one of the many paintings I fell in love with of Murry’s. This piece is both painting and illustration, both static and full of movement. As is Murry’s history. He began as tight-lined, deadline-oriented Illustrator and is now a free flowing, mistake forgiving artist wielding a dream brush. 

   I love the movement Murry’s splatters have as well as the clean-lined pine cones and needles. I also love the pine cones being the only objects with color, almost reminding me of the drapes Mom had years ago – this painting makes me smile with a bit of wistfulness.

   Over all, I believe Murry when he mentions how his paintings “take shape while [he is] semi-asleep.” The muscle memory he stored up after the years as an illustrator must allow him to jump past any pause of how to represent his thoughts- even if it is just a mere suggestion of an object. One can accept his brush shows him the way.

     Vietta’s studio is a fairyland – playful and entertainingly adorned with spinning ballerinas, acrobats, and articulated fish. The playfulness she creates in her work is infectious – one cannot help to almost giggle at these sculptures. This is not to say she is not a serious artist, but like many now (in retirement) chooses play.

    She is not so much a seeker of materials/subject matter, but recognizes these opportunities in and around the studio – a shadow, the shape of a leaf, and uses them both representing itself and becoming an ‘ah-ha!’ portion of another piece. I enjoyed very much listening to her describe having come upon a smooth, variegated stone in the surface of which she could ‘see’ the whole world in the striation.

    Both Vietta’s ballerinas and circus people attracted me as I am very fond of marionettes and puppets and in these I recognized Vietta’s use of the mind’s need to make non-whole objects, whole. Many of the figurative pieces have parts separate from the whole or even duplicate. A playful interaction given a home.

 


 

Horty Jacobs

Enchanting necklaces to appeal to every taste: chic,
elegant, bold, whimsical, extravagant (fishing lures and inherent but personal kinetics)

     Just like it says on the tin! In the short time I visited with Horty, I experienced elegance, boldness, whimsy –but only the most chic of extravagance.

     I felt a personal connection to her jewelry as I create beaded necklaces (though, much more sedate than Horty’s) and -there’s those fish again!  Her studio is brimming with such volume and array of artwork – from the “Jazzy Balls” to the alluring earrings (earrings made of fishing lures much like I wore in my high school days) –  it was difficult to focus on just one piece to highlight here until beginning this post.

I chose this necklace to highlight here for the reason it is comprised of a few objects I don’t recall seeing in jewelry before: WINGNUTS and SAFETY PINS!  I also love the way Horty re-purposes bits and chunks of old jewelry to create neat focus points for her necklaces.

     In Horty’s “prior life” she was a professional photographer and has taken some arresting photos of old rusted cars.  Of the photos, Horty remarks: “My photos are unnamed allowing the viewer to tell their own story of what has been captured on film.”  Many seem to have faces or reminiscences of other objects. Any color + rust is good in my eye!

Forrest Greenslade

     Forrest – molecular biologist – that to me indicates he worked with the minuscule and the non-tactile. He would not have been able to hold the observed and organized objects – quite different from his sculpture and paintings, both of which “ …are highly stylized… built up with inches of thick acrylics and modeling paste to the point they nearly jump off the canvas…”

Inasmuch as his professional world was, I imagine, flat and perhaps all that ‘jumped’ were the childhood memories of salamanders and such from under the rocks, Forrest’s “Organic Forrestry” artwork shouts a full exploration of natural subjects bringing textural “motion and emotion [to his art].”

I first knew of Forrest’s cement sculpture work during my own ‘sculpture-ation’ at Central Carolina Community College but it is his painting and drawing I viewed in his studio that kept my attention at our visit. He does impart texture in many of his works but some are also less-stylized, making me want to explore the fur of the groundhog or opossum, or the wet noses of the raccoon or his pup Stanley, even as they are neither furry nor wet.

 


 

Reynold Ed Maher

     As Leslie Palmer remarked of Reynold’s work, “…Each work is a flow of emotion- a play on the creative process…”. His works are flowing, formless energy without narrative, yet their color-filled dialog holds the viewer near in hopes of discovering their stories.

    Reynold’s work reminded me that if you push for the just the right hues, they shimmer when placed next to each other. He shared with me a postcard of an ancient Egyptian artifact with a particular shade of blue – the Egyptian blue of calcium copper silicate. Reynold pairs this blue with shades of the complimentary and vibrant orange/golds and rust/browns which ask me to see the composition in a reciprocal manner to the shimmering of the colors — they need each other.

   Another complementary observation is that of Reynold and his wife Vietta who shared delicious cookies (and the recipe) with us — both such a treat to meet and spend time with!

Last weekend, I spent a fabulous morning on yet another art tour – the Media Preview of the very first Fearrington Village Artist Open Studio Tour! I was invited by Leslie Palmer (lesliepalmerfineart.com), one of the Fearrington Artists, who opened my eyes, broadened my blog boundaries, and made me an enthusiastic devotee of this very special Art Destination. Now, I’ve known of the Belties (but not the Beltie Goats!) and the Inn, built by R.B. Fitch, is legendary – and perhaps I ran across a recipe by one of the Chefs… but how I missed the fact that the entire development is an Art Destination was the prize of this Pittsboro puzzle! Fearrington background: Fearrington Village as an Art Destination is the vision of Artist Studios at Fearrington Village, the artists’ group. Leslie described to me how, when she was developing the ASFV Marketing plan, she learned it is “very unusual for an artists’ group to have one but we do and it is actually working!”   Following is the list of Fearrington Artists as I was introduced to them by Leslie that day – all of whom I would love to stay connected to when they are part of Salons or other shows.   And, Reynold, I need that cookie recipe!!  Smile

Once thought lost after a most majestic computer crash, I am thrilled to post my notes from the World of Art Showcase International Fine Art Show.

I received an invitation from MMI Public Relations to blog about the show and artists. As is my normal process, I strode through some great art and art makers, conversing, noting and photographing the pieces that grabbed my eye – and held my attention. Delightful and insightful; Venus incorporates the Sanskrit written word AUM in her paintings; the red thread drew me in to look more closely at the works as they were connected – such is the thread through all of us – “should cause one to look more closely at others’ [persons] -honor, appreciate your connection with them/all.”

I love sculpture, of course – I love trying to figure out the story before reading the artist’s title for the pieces. – gotta love the figures and the book folding as well as the many individual ‘statements’ each make. Daniel graciously shared his construction techniques – I so relate to figuring out how to hang three-dimensional work! He was so pleased to have sold several pieces and as I was setting up this photo, sold another one!

“Victoria digitally manipulates a photographs to use as reference and begins the encaustic painting process from there. The images she
renders in the bees wax “…[resonate] with the quieter, more reflective nature of our being…” and belie the chaos of getting the work done, as reflected by this terrific paintbrush image from her site.

His figurative pieces tell intricate stories and his landscapes capture voluminous atmosphere even in the smallest sizes. Jan explained that the landscapes are much easier and quicker to paint because these images have been in front of him all his life. The figurative works, he explains, take much longer as he draws from his imagination. As I do love the landscape work reflecting the scenes of the northeast, especially, I am drawn in to explore the [deeper meaning/”hidden” objects/animals] within the light-veiling affect and use of limited pallet he creates of the figurative works draw me in and appear three-dimensional at times “…He often says ‘Light is the soul of visual artwork. If you master of the nuances of light, you will create a successful piece of art. Creating the nuances
of light can be a struggle, but the struggle itself can be rewarding.’” -credit to his website

Osiris trained in the European tradition – one of my favorite styles – and brings it to a place that is at once illuminated -beyond the gold/silver leafing- and magically atmospheric. Osiris ‘honors’ his work/subject with beautiful framing which, unfortunately, is not apparent for the images on his website. Osiris incorporates a bee or two to honor his beekeeping occupation.

WOAS 2013 – Excellent Journey!

Excellent day yesterday meeting a bunch of local artists and art associations at the World of Art Showcase to feature on my blog – tickets graciously provided by MMI who invited me to view the show and blog about it… fun fun fun!woas 2013

I have so much in my head, my electronic pen and my catalog notes — plus pictures of some of my favorite artists posing with their art — lots to do!

Layers and Lineage: A ‘round about, and home again

Abstract, Impressionist, and an introduction to new art and processes from four Fine Art artists

I planned to visit this particular gallery this month and was happy to have chosen Super Bowl Sunday (I normally ramble around galleries on Sunday afternoons –they’re quieter and I find less competition for viewing space -it is a selfish thing…). I was greeted not only by room after room of new and interesting paintings, jewelry, sculpture, pottery, photography –but also met and spoke with four of the 20 or so up and coming artists that make up the co-op, Roundabout Art Collective!

I moseyed around listening quietly to some discussion at the far end of the building for several minutes until I had made my way to one of the front rooms. I admit I’d seen so much art by the time I made it to that room (and, kids, the gallery building is not that big!) that I was happy to be welcomed by Yuko Taylor who engaged me in discussion about her paintings and some of the other artists’ work displayed elsewhere in that room. Yuko then introduced me to Sue Edmonson and Linda Kimball who were also at the gallery that afternoon. And, after my tour of the Roundabout, Yuko brought me over to Moondog Cottage, a nearby collection of studios she shares with a few more artists, one of which was Susan Dahlin who was working away on a new painting.

Back to Yuko – she has a very interesting  technique in her work in which she references historic photographs from the South and layers them with traditional themes and imagery from her Japanese heritage. The applied symbols and imagery, and her use of an overlaying/dripping technique in her oils, empower and ‘encourage’  the affect of allowing the past to dissolve to a new reality which is emblazoned with prayers and dreams of happiness, wealth and grace.

In “One Day II”, Yuko’s use of a very traditional crane image and symbolism act  as as both a foil to the child’s job as a sharecropper and a balancing reflection of the white of the cotton he’s bagging. I’m drawn to the myriad of visible layers in this painting as well as the cross symbolism style. For me, more than most of her works, this piece reminds me of a richly embroidered brocade.

Sue Edmonson was the next ‘host’ of my tour. She is a relatively new artist and has taken lessons from various instructors in the area. Sue paints many layers as she develops her paintings whether they are tree-scapes or visions of the night sky she enjoys as a lover of nature. In one of her tree paintings, I can really get a sense of the atmosphere you’d be standing in while viewing the trees in person. She’s also the 2nd snow painter I learned from that snow holds many more colors than just white which, in her painting, makes it seem all the surrounding earth and sky are within the snow.

In her work Whirlpool Galaxy, Sue shows how well she personalizes such an image normally only viewed from a NASA photograph and invites a long gaze at all the stars and depth she’s captured.

I also ‘met’ a new art technique up close that day, as well as the artist: The encaustic painting technique of layering melted beeswax and colored pigments. Linda Kimball starts with the wax and pigments and adds fabrics and layers of other embedded materials including, in some, gold-leaf.  Her encaustics appear fragile as melted wax but the process gives this work surprising toughness.

The image Linda sent for this post is “Elaine Still Life” which won 3rd Place in the recent Visual Art Exchange’s 29th Annual Art Auction & Gala Silent & Live Auction. Yay, Linda!  All of these encaustics’ layers of wax and imagery include “…a presence of ‘Elaine’”, a representation of her mother. Some of the ‘presences’ are quite visible, but some you’ll have to search for!  I particularly like the texture layer added to the fruit in this still life, and can really appreciate the dream quality she affects.

Yuko lastly brought me over to the Moondog Cottage and introduced me to more of her work and also to Susan Dahlin, who was working away at one of her newer pieces. Susan’s work is as individual as she is and she is a prolific contemporary painter –a “colorist” in her words. Susan paints in oils with a pallet knife and mixes her thickly applied paints on the canvas versus the pallet.

The piece I highlight here is at first glance quite muted when viewed near her other works but the contrast of the textured earth and stone tones against the smooth sky give it a nice energy – energy being another reflection of Susan’s personality.

Our State Magazine writes of Susan:  “…as each painting nears completion, she pulls out one of [her dad’s] old tubes and applies a little color from it. It’s a way, she says, ‘to stick a little bit of Dad in every painting’” –similarly embedding lineage as done in Linda’s encaustics and Yuko’s layering of heratige, and in the many layers of nature in Sue’s paintings.

Look for a link to the video from ‘Tarheel Traveler’ on her website from when her family artists visited – so fun for me to hear Norske accents again –Mom always did claim her as a daughter when we would see her on the TV…!

As if having all this eclectic collection of work and artists to meet isn’t enough for a visit, the Roundabout Art Collective also has a gift shop where the artists offer items for sale including small scale pieces, greeting card repro’s and even some sale items of full-scale work.
